Until a few years ago, the whisky industry around Campbeltown – once the beating heart of the Scotch whisky export business – was on its last legs and in danger of disappearing altogether, but thanks to the Mitchell family, it has turned a significant corner. One can only imagine the pride they must have felt in this part of the world when Campbeltown was given an official regional status.

The former site of the closed Glengyle distillery was bought by the owners of nearby Springbank, and spirit production began in 2004. Although a 3-year-old was released in 2007, the first proper release came in 2016 under the name Kilkerran, because the Glengyle name is registered to a blended malt. Before that a series of “works in progress” were released and they are still available. The distillery is also not shy of experimentation so there may be some left-field releases in the future.
